At a crucial meeting of newly elected Trinamool Congress MLAs held at her Kalighat residence, party chief Mamata Banerjee made it clear that she intends to challenge the 2026 West Bengal election results in the Supreme Court, according to sources familiar with the discussions.
She also raised serious concerns over alleged irregularities in the polling process, pointing fingers at both the BJP — which won a decisive majority of over 200 seats — and the Election Commission of India.
Indicating a shift towards a legal route, Banerjee said she, along with former Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Chandrima Bhattacharya, who lost in the recent elections, plans to return to court practice to contest the outcome.
Despite the setback, Banerjee appeared determined to stay politically active. She reiterated that her focus now is on strengthening the opposition INDIA alliance at the national level, a point she had also highlighted during her press conference a day earlier.
The outgoing Chief Minister made it clear that she has no intention of stepping down, describing her decision to remain in office as a form of protest against what she called a mandate that was taken away unfairly. She had expressed the same view during her press conference a day earlier.
Echoing her stance, Abhishek Banerjee said that continuing in their respective roles could itself serve as a legitimate way to protest the alleged irregularities in the Bengal elections. He also appealed to party leaders not to resign from their positions. The Diamond Harbour MP further told ANI that the party plans to take legal action over the incidents of post-poll violence.
After the meeting, Mamata Banerjee added that the Centre is free to impose President’s Rule if it chooses to do so, but said such a move should be officially recorded.
Mamata Banerjee has asked party leaders to play Rabindra Sangeet — the timeless songs of Rabindranath Tagore — across all TMC offices on May 9, the day the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground.
She also gave clear instructions to all newly elected candidates to stay in their respective constituencies and remain actively connected with people at the grassroots level.
