The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a new weather warning for Bengaluru and several parts of Karnataka. The forecast predicts continuous rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds over the next few days. Amidst intensifying pre-monsoon activity across the state, the weather department has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for Bengaluru.
According to IMD forecasts, Bengaluru is likely to experience rainfall ranging from light to heavy, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds—particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. Several districts across South Interior Karnataka, Coastal Karnataka, and North Interior Karnataka are also expected to witness widespread rainfall over the coming days.
Due to recent heavy rainfall, several parts of Bengaluru have already experienced severe traffic jams, waterlogging, and travel disruptions. Low-lying areas were inundated, while commuters faced lengthy traffic snarls on main roads and intersections. Reports also indicate that adverse weather conditions caused temporary disruptions to metro and flight operations.
While this sudden torrential rain may have provided relief from the scorching heat, it has also exposed the challenges related to the city’s drainage systems and infrastructure. Civic authorities and emergency response teams have been placed on alert to take immediate action on complaints related to flooding and rain-related issues.
The IMD has warned residents to remain vigilant, as several districts are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds gusting at speeds of 40–60 kmph. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapura, Ramanagara, Tumakuru, and surrounding areas.
Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall and to stay away from waterlogged areas, vulnerable structures, and open spaces during lightning strikes.
According to weather forecasts, rainfall is likely to persist across Karnataka over the next several days due to strong pre-monsoon weather systems. Some districts may also experience isolated hailstorms and severe thunderstorms.
As per the IMD’s forecast, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in several districts of South Interior Karnataka between May 22 and May 25. Coastal regions are also expected to witness continuous rainfall accompanied by lightning activity.
Transport services in Bengaluru and its surrounding areas have begun to be affected due to adverse weather conditions. Following disruptions to flight schedules at Bengaluru Airport caused by storms, several airlines—including IndiGo—have issued travel advisories. Passengers are advised to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.
Road transport has also been impacted due to heavy rainfall, reduced visibility, and traffic congestion on the city’s main thoroughfares.
Although residents in some areas have faced inconvenience due to the rains, many have welcomed the respite from the heat following weeks of scorching weather. With continuous cloud cover and intermittent rainfall, temperatures in Bengaluru are expected to remain relatively pleasant.
Weather experts believe that this prevailing weather pattern signals that monsoon conditions will gradually intensify across most parts of South India in the coming weeks.
Officials have urged residents to strictly adhere to weather-related warnings and to avoid venturing onto waterlogged roads during heavy rainfall. Emergency services and disaster relief teams are closely monitoring the situation in vulnerable areas.
People are advised to:
Rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds are expected to persist over Bengaluru and several parts of Karnataka for the next few days as pre-monsoon activity intensifies. While these rains offer relief from the heat, they are simultaneously causing disruptions to traffic and daily life.
Residents are advised to stay updated with official warnings issued by the Meteorological Department and to exercise necessary precautions during periods of heavy rainfall and stormy weather. As Karnataka draws closer to the monsoon season, the likelihood of further rainfall increases.
